Celebrating freedom, democracy, and Václav Havel’s legacy through film, dialogue, and community connection.

Join us for an inspiring evening celebrating the shared values of freedom, democracy, and friendship between nations, honoring the enduring legacy of Václav Havel, playwright, dissident, and statesman whose vision continues to inspire people around the world.

The program brings together students, civic leaders, and community members for reflection, dialogue, and connection in the spirit of democratic ideals.

The evening opens with a musical prelude and welcome remarks, setting the tone for a celebration of shared ideals and international friendship.

A highlight of the program is a student-led conversation, “What Freedom and Democracy Mean to Me,” offering fresh perspectives on how democratic values continue to shape lives and communities today.

We are honored to welcome Alderman Brendan Reilly (42nd Ward), who will present the City Resolution honoring Václav Havel’s enduring legacy and his global impact on human rights and democratic leadership.

The evening continues with a screening of “Havel, Speaking – Can You Hear Me?” (2023), a powerful and intimate documentary by Petr Jančárek. Based on over 200 hours of never-before-seen footage, the film captures Havel’s final years, revealing both his public role as a respected statesman and his private reflections filled with humor, creativity, and moral courage.

To close the evening, guests are invited to a light reception and networking opportunity, an informal space to continue the conversation, connect with fellow attendees, and build community around shared values.

Come be part of a meaningful celebration that bridges cultures and generations. Experience stories of resilience, engage in thoughtful dialogue, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward a more just and open society.
