Hierve el Agua is a unique place that was formed thousands of years ago by the runoff of calcium carbonated water that features rugged cliffs and natural springs with endless views of the surrounding mountains. From the springs, the water drips down cliffs that are 50 to 80 meters high.
This place is also an important archeological site where more than 2,500 years ago a complex irrigation system was built by a Zapotec indigenous group. It is formed by sets of terraces and canals that cover a wide extension around the area and it is unique in its type in Mexico.
