This year, the Carrières des Lumières is honoring two French painters through two immersive exhibitions.
The first is dedicated to the famous Impressionist painter Claude Monet and showcases his greatest masterpieces. Through this retrospective, you will discover his compositions captured on the spot and his luminous palette from a new angle.
Claude Monet found some of his inspiration in 19th-century Paris, a city undergoing transformation and innovation.
His works also reflect his love of nature: the banks of the Seine, the shores of the Mediterranean, the Normandy countryside… As well as his idyllic garden in Giverny, a veritable open-air laboratory that gave birth to many of his works.
Europe, from London to Italy, was also a great source of inspiration for Claude Monet.
You will also get a glimpse of his collection of Japanese prints, of which he was a great enthusiast.
The second exhibition takes you into the naive art and world of Henri Rousseau, also known as “Le Douanier Rousseau.” His dreamlike and sometimes childlike works come to life on the rocky walls of the Carrières des Lumières.
Henri Rousseau was a self-taught painter who never left France but escaped through the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
You will discover 19th-century Paris through his unique eyes, as well as flower-filled landscapes and imaginary jungles populated by wild animals.
His poetic world, which will appeal to young and old alike, is a true invitation to dream and escape!
