Mexico: Ancient Flavors and Yaxuna Maya Cultural Experience – Cenote LOL-HA, Mexico
Experience Maya culture on a private tour. Cook cochinita pibil, explore Yaxuná ruins, swim in Lol Há cenote, and enjoy a traditional meal with local women.
PRICE:
Begin your day with a private pickup from your hotel in Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or Valladolid. Travel in comfort to the Yaxuná Maya Village, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by local women in traditional huipiles.
Learn the ancestral methods of preparing cochinita pibil, a traditional Maya dish. Grind spices on an authentic stone metate, mix achiote and sour orange marinade, and marinate pork using traditional techniques. Bury the pot in an underground pib (earth oven) for cooking.
Next, explore the untouched ruins of Yaxuná, inhabited since the Preclassic era. Climb the Acropolis for panoramic views of the jungle, visit an ancient ruler’s tomb, and discover architectural styles influenced by Puuc and Petén. Learn about the sacbé, a 100km ancient road to Cobá.
Afterward, cool off with a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lol Há Cenote. Enjoy natural jumping platforms and float under beams of sunlight. Life vests are provided for safety, making it suitable for all swimming levels.
Finally, return to the village for a community feast. Unearth and dig out the buried pib together, then enjoy your prepared cochinita pibil with fresh handmade tortillas, traditional rice and beans, and homemade sauces and salsas. Engage in cultural conversations with community members before returning to your accommodation.
