The Annie Effect In Harlem at Harlem School of the Arts at The Herb Alpert Center – New York, NY

Join us for a re-imagining of Annie Jr.!

This HSA production will see the iconic musical relocated to the vibrant, historically rich streets of Harlem. This is a community defined by its legacy of Black and Brown culture, now steadily growing more diverse and it’s such a dynamic blend perfectly reflected by the students at The Harlem School of the Arts.

The production’s central choice is to present the story through three distinct young girls who rotate the role of Annie.

This is more than a casting decision: It is an act of intentional empathy. By having Annies from varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, audiences are challenged to consider:

• How does the classic journey of an orphan change when it is filtered through different personal experiences?
• What does “Tomorrow” mean to a girl whose path and promise look different from another’s?

The result is a production that celebrates diversity and insists that while the search for hope and family is a universal human theme, the journey to find it is intensely personal for everyone.
