Table Mountain is one of South Africa’s most iconic natural landmarks, standing proudly over the city of Cape Town. It is world-renowned for its unique flat-topped shape, which resembles a table, hence the name. Rising approximately 1,067 meters (3,563 feet) above sea level, it forms a prominent backdrop to Cape Town and offers stunning panoramic views of the city, Table Bay, Robben Island, and the Cape Peninsula.

Geologically, Table Mountain is incredibly old—its rocks are estimated to be around 600 million years old, making it one of the oldest mountains in the world. The mountain’s flat summit stretches about 3 kilometers and is often draped in a white cloud layer known as the “tablecloth,” caused by a weather phenomenon involving moist air from the ocean.

The mountain is part of the Table Mountain National Park and lies within the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite its relatively small area, this region boasts an astonishing diversity of plant life, with over 1,470 species found on Table Mountain alone—many of which are endemic.

Visitors can reach the summit by hiking one of several trails, such as Platteklip Gorge or Skeleton Gorge, or by taking the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which features rotating cars for 360° views during the ascent.

Table Mountain is more than just a geological wonder—it is a cultural and spiritual symbol for many South Africans and a must-see destination for travelers seeking nature, adventure, and breathtaking beauty.
