The Leipzig South Cemetery, consecrated in 1886, is one of the most important cemeteries in Europe in terms of culture and art history. The extremely impressive area monument unites the ingenious park creation of Lenné’s pupil Otto Wittenberg, around 500 important works of funerary art, the largest European cemetery building, and also the largest columbarium north of the Alps.
At 82 hectares, the Südfriedhof is the largest cemetery in Leipzig. It is located in the south of Leipzig in the vicinity of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations and, alongside the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg and the Südwestkirchhof in Stahnsdorf near Berlin is one of the largest park-like cemeteries in Germany.
