A live theatrical production commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, featuring powerful monologues, projections, and historical narration

We the People: A Black American Testimony is a live theatrical production created in observance of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence (1776–2026).

This project is supported in part by the Craven Arts Council & Gallery and the North Carolina Arts Council.

This powerful stage experience examines America’s founding principles through the lens of Black American history and its enduring contributions to the nation.

Through dramatic monologues, projected historical imagery, narration, and live performance, the production moves audiences through 250 years of truth, resistance, sacrifice, and progress — from the earliest foundations of this country to present-day realities.

The cast includes Nick Courmon as Malcolm X, a nationally recognized North Carolina poet and spoken word artist whose performances have been featured by major media outlets and on prominent stages.

This is not a traditional play. It is an immersive historical reflection.

Audiences can expect:

• Compelling character-driven monologues

• Historically grounded storytelling

• Visual projections

• Emotional and thought-provoking moments

• A powerful closing call to reflection

The performance contains mature and historically sensitive themes that may be emotionally intense for some viewers. Viewer discretion is advised.

Concessions will be available for purchase during intermission. Please note that food and beverages are not permitted inside the theater.

100% of net proceeds from this production will be donated to Young Urban Professionals of Eastern North Carolina (YUP ENC), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of art, history, and truth-telling as we reflect on what “We the People” has meant — and what it must become.
