Absheron tour covers four main historical spots of Absheron peninsula: Ateshgah Temple, Yanar Dag (“Burning Mountain”), Qala Museum and Mardakan Tower.
You will get acquainted with ethnographic traditions of ancient people at Qala Open-Air Museum. It will be great way to deep dive into folklore of Azerbaijanis in a mindful way. You will see petroglyphs (stone carvings) dating back to the third and second millennia B.C and the Middle Ages, household ceramics and archaeological artifacts discovered in the Absheron Peninsula. Merchant’s house is a magnificent example of medieval dwelling houses existing in the village. Furthermore, tombstones, kurgans (artificial mound), various tools, such as “khana” (tool for carpet weaving) are demonstrated in the museum. The museum also exhibits some modern artworks, bridging the past and modernity with a touch of sustainability.

After, we will explore the serene Mardakan Quadranqular Tower, one of the ancient towers located in the village. Its medieval feel will make you feel as if being part of the Game of Thrones movie. In addition to its historical significance, Quadrangular Tower in Mardakan is one of the majestic castles and a part of Absheron’s integrated defense system. The tower was located in such a convenient place, that seashore, Gala and Ramana fortresses were easily visible from the Tower.

Our third stop is the “Yanar Dagh”, which translates as the “burning mountain”. You will hear some legends about this place and how Azerbaijan became the hotspot (literally) of Zoroastrians. In ancient times natural eternal flames were burning in many places of Absheron. This will be our preparation for the last stop at Ateshgah Temple, a worshiping temple of Zoroastrians and Hindus. Here you will get to know how such a place could exist in this territory and how Islamic customs didn’t interfere with other religions and beliefs.
