A real city break, this visit to Aubusson and Felletin is above all an urban adventure. But don’t worry, nature is never far away… After exploring the town center, head up into the green surroundings, still in the open air! An ideal activity for family or friends…
Designed to be done in your own vehicle, the journey between the two towns can also be made by public transport (regional bus). Depending on how much time you have, you can choose to visit both towns or just one of them. We will have lunch together, either in a restaurant or at a picnic table, in the picturesque setting of the Creuse Valley.
Capital of tapestry makers, Aubusson is one of the largest towns in the Creuse with 3,000 inhabitants, and the only sub-prefecture in the department. A major tourist attraction in the Creuse, this medieval town is full of gems that I will show you, mainly on foot, through its narrow streets and numerous stairways.
You won’t miss any of its views and heritage: the castle promontory overlooking the town, the Clock Tower, the dark but no less magnificent Sainte-Croix Church, the tapestry shops and many other curiosities. Watch out for your calves, as the town of Aubusson is not very flat… We will continue our journey to Felletin, stopping off at mysterious places steeped in history.
The capital of weavers, Felletin is the twin town of the sub-prefecture, located just 15 kilometers upstream on the Creuse. Between diamond cutting, masonry, and tapestry, its expertise resonates in unison with that of Aubusson. With a rich religious heritage that we will glimpse during our stroll, the town also benefits from the relief of the Creuse Valley to offer us beautiful views. You will discover its must-see attractions, including the Roby Bridge, the diamond cooperative, and the mysterious Chapel of the White Penitents…
On the way back to Aubusson, we can stop on the banks of the Creuse at the Lac des Combes dam. This rather imposing dam is complemented by waterfalls that can be quite impressive when the river is in full flow. The more adventurous can explore the surrounding woods on steep trails along the valley side! Beautiful panoramic views await us throughout the return journey.
