From the mid-16th century, the Netherlands increasingly began to host a growing Jewish community that settled mainly in Amsterdam, taking advantage of the relative religious freedom. This turned the Dutch capital into the most important center of Sephardic Jews in Western Europe, and it was even considered the Dutch Jerusalem.
