Faculty Recital: Russell Rolen, cello at Ganz Hall at Roosevelt University – Chicago, IL
Don’t miss this upcoming event in Chicago, IL. Happening on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at Ganz Hall at Roosevelt University. Doors open at 7:00 PM.
“Write for the cello everything that your heart tells you, never mind how difficult it is; my love for you will help me to master every note, even the most impossible ones.” — Mstislav Rostropovich, in a letter to Benjamin Britten
Inspired by the legendary partnership of Rostropovich and Britten, this recital leans into their ethos of fearless listening, flexible rubato, and luminous color. Cellist Russell Rolen (Artist Faculty, Roosevelt University CCPA) opens his faculty season with the work that first drew him to this idea — Britten’s Sonata in C for Cello and Piano, Op. 65 — followed by two pieces the duo recorded with unforgettable intimacy: Schumann’s Five Pieces in Folk Style, Op. 102 and Debussy’s Cello Sonata.
Rolen is joined by two outstanding collaborators: Winston Choi, piano (Associate Professor of Piano, CCPA) in the Schumann and Debussy; and Yebin Kor, piano (MM Candidate, Collaborative Piano) in the Britten. Expect a concise, focused evening that prizes dialogue and spontaneity.
Running time: ≈60 minutes, no intermission
Seating is general admission. Doors open 30 minutes prior to concert time. For accessibility questions about Ganz Hall, please contact Roosevelt University/CCPA.
