Follavoine, un fabricant de porcelaine, a invité à déjeuner, dans son appartement, un client de marque : Chouilloux, fonctionnaire influent du Ministère des armées qui doit statuer sur l’acquisition par l’Armée française de pots de chambre destinés aux soldats. Il espère emporter le marché, ayant mis au point un système de pots présumés incassables. Pour mettre toutes les chances de son côté, il a invité également Mme Chouilloux et son amant, Horace Truchet. L’infortune conjugale de Chouilloux est en effet de notoriété publique, seul ce dernier ignore la trahison. Mais un événement fâcheux va contrarier les plans de Follavoine. Sa femme, Julie, encore en bigoudis et robe de chambre, vient le trouver dans son bureau pour se plaindre des caprices de leur fils Hervé, dit Toto : ce dernier, qui n’a pas été ce matin-là, refuse obstinément d’avaler le purgatif qu’on lui destine. Chouilloux arrive sur ces entrefaites et s’efforce de jouer les conciliateurs, lui-même ayant été soigné naguère pour constipation relâchée … mais pas du même type.
