Children don’t see age, they see friends, playmates, and fellow explorers. Yet in most learning environments, we divide them into neat age groups and miss the chance to witness the unique magic that happens when children of different ages come together. Mixed-age play is more than a strategy; it is a philosophy of learning and living that reflects real life, where people of all ages learn with and from one another. In this session, we’ll explore how mixed-age play fosters empathy, collaboration, creativity, and belonging. We’ll also acknowledge the “messiness”, the balancing acts, and the flexibility it demands of educators and reframe them as opportunities for growth. Through stories, reflections, and inspiration, participants will be encouraged to see children not through the lens of age or ability, but through their capacity to lead, to learn, and to contribute meaningfully to a community. This session invites you to step into the world of play without borders—a place where every child belongs, every child teaches, and every child learns.
Jammie Trinidad a lifelong learner and a rebel…a Play Rebel, to be specific, but with a cause. Jammie challenge old norms and empower educators to create spaces where children thrive, explore, spark curiosity, and truly belong. As a Site Director of a Play and Exploration–based centre in Regina, Saskatchewan, Jammie supports educators in embracing authentic play by reconnecting with their own inner childhood. Jammie has led multiple virtual sessions on play and hosted Site Visits through the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education–Early Years. Jammie pushes back against cookie-cutter childcare and rigid expectations because play isn’t just fun—it’s essential. It’s the foundation for growth.
