A long time ago (1987) in a galaxy far, far away (Winfield, Kansas), he also won the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship, and is the only person to have won both of those awards.The Toronto Fingerstyle Association dubbed Stephen “the Jedi master of fingerstyle guitar”.
Stephen has toured the U.S. and performed all over the world, appearing with many musicians of note, including Lulu Reinhardt, Itamar Erez, Andy McKee, and Tommy Emmanuel. He has released 37 albums, 33 of them on his own, the rest in collaboration with others including Brothers with his brother, Jim. His most recent album Still Got It came out in August 2025. As is usually the case, work on his next album is underway.
Stephen has played a significant role in the renaissance of the harp guitar and is the founder of the annual Harp Guitar Gathering™. The 24th HGG will take place in November 2026 in Lawrence, Kansas.
Tickets in advance are $33.85 each. Tickets are available at the door for $35 cash and $35 plus fee if paying by card. Admission is free for students. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Church of the Holy Comforter Music Ministry.
