Still life photographs inspired by Early Netherlandish painting

Tompkins Corners presents Making Arrangements, a new exhibition by Lori Adams, opening Sunday, April 26, with a free Artist’s Reception from 2–4 p.m. in the Maaike Hoekstra Gallery. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit remains on view during public events through June 22.

Making Arrangements features still life photographs inspired by Early Netherlandish painting (c. 1420–1560), a style developed in the Low Countries (present-day Belgium and the Netherlands) known for its luminous realism, rich color, and subtle light. Originally a commissioned project, the work draws on this tradition to create carefully composed scenes. “With these photographs, I try to tell a story in that style,” Adams says, “celebrating plants, food, intriguing objects, and evocative light.”

Adams has exhibited widely throughout the Hudson Valley and has contributed both writing and photography to garden and science books for children and adults. Her photographic interests are broad, but all focus on thoughtful and structured visual communication.

Her life and work are shaped by studies in science, mathematics, art, and photography. Adams spent many years working as a commercial photographer and educator, teaching students of all ages. Gardening, reading, and spending time with creative and curious family and friends are among her greatest joys. loriadamsphoto.com

This exhibit is supported by a grant from the Anne Anastasi Foundation, facilitated by Jonathan Galente and Mary Beth Minton.
