Tricky est apparu pour la première fois en tant que MC sur le premier album de Massive Attack, « Blue Lines ». Membre fondateur de la scène trip hop de Bristol, qui comprenait également Portishead, ses performances vocales puissantes sur « Blue Lines » et un titre de l’album suivant « Protection » annonçaient déjà son succès en solo.Son premier album « Maxinquaye » est sorti en 1995 et est devenu un succès underground, ses ventes s’étendant au grand public malgré une absence de diffusion radio. Les rimes de Tricky, associées aux mélodies envoûtantes de la chanteuse Martina Topley-Bird, ont conduit beaucoup à qualifier cet album de classique moderne.En 1996, Tricky a sorti l’album de collaboration « Nearly God », tandis que « Pre-Millenium Tension » est paru vers la fin de la même année. Après une année passée principalement à remixer d’autres artistes, Tricky est revenu en 1998 avec « Angels With Dirty Faces », un album à l’ambiance encore plus sombre que ses précédents.Son album suivant, Juxtapose, s’est inspiré davantage du hip-hop, avec la participation de Muggs de Cypress Hill et DMX.
