This in-person, land-based professional learning session supports early years educators in using Indigenous children’s literature as a foundation for a meaningful, culturally grounded curriculum. Centered on The Adventures of Jay and Gizmo: Jay and Gizmo Learn About Pow Wows, participants will explore how storytelling can be expanded through Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee teachings, food sovereignty, and outdoor learning.
This session will begin with a book reading and cultural presentation by author Kristi White. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that demonstrate how story, land, and Indigenous knowledge can be woven into early learning environments for children ages 0-6. This session will support educators in deepening their understanding of Indigenous perspectives while gaining practical ideas for culturally responsive and play-based practice.
Kristi White is an author and member of the Oneida Nation of the Ahtmes. Her focus is on Indigenous language and culture revitalization, and an awakening in boy’s literacy. Kristi White is a proud Haudenosaunee women. As a mother and grandmother, Kristi has spent many years guiding the Establishment and Implementation of programs for families and children based around healthy living, healthy relationships, literacy and cultural appropriate content and has worked alongside and consulted with numerous agencies across Canada. Kristi is a children’s author who has 4 book series out that is focused on Indigenous children, especially boys and literacy, Kristi creates a story with books that open the hearts and minds of children for all walks of life, inspiring them to read deeper, search further, and explore their own gifts.
