Deux oeuvres intenses du XXe siècle se répondent : les lieder d’Alma Mahler, entre nostalgie et renouveau, et Les Planètes de Gustav Holst, fresque symphonique inspirée par le caractère astrologique des corps célestes. Élève d’Alexander von Zemlinsky, Alma Schindler abandonne la composition à son mariage avec Gustav Mahler. Huit ans plus tard, encouragée par Freud et libérée de l’interdit conjugal, elle revient à l’écriture avec une série de lieder sensibles et puissants, portés par les poèmes de Rilke, Bierbaum ou Dehmel. Figure flamboyante, amoureuse de Kokoschka, Gropius puis Werfel, elle traversa le siècle en inspirant autant qu’elle créait. Sa vie a nourri des romans, des films, dont le célèbre Alma, la fiancée du vent de Bruce Beresford et le portrait signé Françoise Giroud.Gustav Holst, lui, regarde le ciel. Entre 1914 et 1917, il compose Les Planètes, oeuvre cosmique en sept tableaux. Mars incarne la guerre, Vénus la paix, Mercure le voyage. Jupiter, porteur de gaieté, servira à créer le célèbre chant patriotique britannique Vow to Thee, My Country. Saturne, planète de la vieillesse, est la préférée du compositeur. Uranus, le magicien, rend hommage à Dukas, et Neptune, la mystique, s’efface dans le silence de l’infini. Créée en 1918, cette oeuvre fit la gloire de Holst.
