A Brief History of the City of Seven Wonders

Flagstaff has a history that is quite different from other Arizona cities. For a long time, the area was home to the Sinagua and Hopi people. The city got its modern name in 1876 when a group of travelers stripped the branches off a tall pine tree to fly the American flag for the centennial celebration. This “flag staff” became a landmark for others moving west.

The city grew quickly because of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. It became a major center for the timber and sheep industries. In 1894, a scientist named Percival Lowell built an observatory here because the air was so clear and the skies were so dark. This put Flagstaff on the map as a center for science. In fact, Pluto was discovered at the Lowell Observatory in 1930. Today, the city is a famous stop on the historic Route 66, and you can still see many of the old neon signs and buildings from that era in the downtown district.

Flagstaff is known as the City of Seven Wonders because it is close to amazing sites like the Grand Canyon and the San Francisco Peaks. It sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet, which means it gets plenty of snow in the winter and stays cool in the summer.
