Hidden deep within the lush jungle, the ancient Maya city of Cobá stands as both a remarkable archaeological site and the number one birding hotspot on eBird.
Thanks to a rich variety of ecosystems — including several freshwater lakes — Cobá thrived between 300 and 900 AD as the largest urban center in northern Yucatán. Today, it offers visitors not only the chance to explore its historical significance but also to discover a stunning diversity of birdlife in a truly unique setting.
The tour begins with a peaceful walk around Lake Cobá, where we look for water-loving species such as the Spotted Rail, Least Grebe, Ruddy Crake, Limpkin, Snail Kite, and Purple Gallinule. In the surrounding vegetation, we may also spot colorful birds like the Gray-crowned Yellowthroat, Blue-gray and Yellow-winged Tanagers, Hooded and Orange Orioles, Yellow-faced Grassquit, Morelet’s Seedeater, and many more.
As soon as the archaeological site opens, we’ll be among the first to enter, heading straight into the dense primary jungle that now envelopes this ancient city. Here, we continue our birdwatching adventure in search of species such as the magnificent Ocellated Turkey, Lesson’s and Turquoise-browed Motmot, various trogons including Black-headed, Gartered, and Collared, as well as Masked and Black-crowned Tityras, Yucatan and Green Jays, Brown Jays, Yucatan Parrot, and many others.
Depending on the time of year, it’s possible to identify between 40 and 80 species in just one morning.
After a fulfilling morning of birding, we’ll enjoy a delicious local meal — the perfect way to relax and recharge before returning to your hotel or accommodation.
