After pickup at the arranged meeting point in Baku, we drive 50 minutes to the Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve. Guests begin their journey at the Gobustan Museum, a cutting-edge facility showcasing over 6,000 Stone Age rock engravings that depict prehistoric hunting, rituals and daily life. The museum provides a deep scientific context, enhancing understanding of the region’s archaeological and cultural significance. Visitors spend approximately 40 minutes here with explanations from their private guide.
Next, the tour moves 3 minutes to the Gobustan Rock Shelters and Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These shelters contain thousands of petroglyphs dating back 40,000 years, revealing the behavior, social structure, and spiritual practices of early humans. The natural formations also served as protective living spaces and communal areas. Archaeological excavations have uncovered tools, pottery, and dwelling remnants, offering a comprehensive view of prehistoric life. Guests spend about 40 minutes exploring this extraordinary landscape.
The journey continues with 20 minutes driving to the Gobustan Mud Volcanoes, where over 50 geological formations dominate the surreal terrain. These mud volcanoes are formed as natural gas, primarily methane, rises through underground sediments, mixing with water and erupting as mud, creating conical mounds that evolve over time. The landscape is both scientifically fascinating and visually striking, perfect for observation and photography. Visitors spend around 30 minutes witnessing this rare geological phenomenon.
On the return to Baku, we stop after 50 minutes at Bibi Heybat Mosque, a historically and architecturally significant structure originally built in the 13th century and reconstructed in the 1990s. The mosque represents classic Islamic architecture and remains a spiritual landmark. Guests explore the site for 15 minutes with insights from their guide.
The tour then proceeds 40 minutes driving to Ateshgah – the Fire Temple of Baku, an ancient Zoroastrian site in Surakhani. Built in the 17th–18th centuries atop natural gas vents, the temple’s central fire pit exemplifies the region’s long-standing fire-worship tradition. This sacred site highlights the interplay between natural phenomena and spiritual practices, attracting historians, archaeologists and cultural tourists. Guests spend 40 minutes immersed in the temple’s unique ambiance.
The final stop is Yanardag – Burning Mountain, located 30 minutes from the Fire Temple. This natural eternal flame has burned continuously for centuries, with flames reaching up to 3 meters high from porous sandstone vents. Yanardag produces a steady, mesmerizing wall of fire, especially dramatic at dusk. Guests spend 30 minutes observing this natural wonder while enjoying panoramic scenery.
The tour concludes with a 40-minute drive back to the hotel or arranged drop-off point in Baku. The total duration is 7-8 hours under standard conditions.
