Hike to the summit of Oʻahu’s most iconic volcanic crater and take in sweeping views of Waikīkī, the sparkling Pacific Ocean, and the lush Hawaiian coastline. Along the way, explore historic WWII bunkers, rugged volcanic landscapes, and a thrilling tunnel climb. The unforgettable views from the top make every step worth it!

1. Trailhead to Switchbacks (15 minutes)
• Start your hike at the paved section that leads to dirt and uneven paths.
• Observe the unique dryland vegetation and lava rock formations along the way.
• The first portion has gentle inclines and offers a great warm-up.
2. Switchbacks to the Tunnel (15 minutes)
• Zigzag through the switchbacks as the trail steepens.
• Pause to enjoy the views of the crater floor and the surrounding landscape.
• Arrive at a short, dimly lit tunnel (bring a flashlight or use your phone light).
3. Tunnel to the Stairs (10 minutes)
• Climb a steep set of 74 concrete steps leading to a spiral staircase.
• This section is challenging but exciting!
4. Observation Bunker to the Summit (10 minutes)
• At the top of the spiral staircase, pass through a historic observation bunker from WWII.
• Ascend a final short staircase to the summit lookout.
