A Journey Through Huntsville History
Huntsville has a long and interesting story that began in 1805. It was founded by John Hunt near a massive natural spring that still flows today. In 1819, Huntsville became the temporary capital of Alabama. It was the site of the first state convention where the people wrote the first constitution for the state. For many years, the town was famous for growing cotton and operating textile mills.
The city changed forever in the 1950s. A team of scientists led by Wernher von Braun moved here to build rockets for the United States. Their work helped launch the first American satellite into space. Before it was known for rockets, Huntsville was actually called the Watercress Capital of the World because of its local farming. Today, it is famous for its role in the Space Race and its help in sending humans to the moon.
Modern Wonders and Fun Facts about the Rocket City
Huntsville is home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, which is the largest space museum in the world. You can see the massive Saturn V rocket and visit the famous Space Camp where students learn to be astronauts. This history is why the city has such a unique culture filled with engineers and scientists.
If you enjoy the outdoors, Monte Sano State Park offers beautiful views and miles of hiking trails. The name Monte Sano means Mountain of Health, and it has been a popular vacation spot for over one hundred years. For art lovers, Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment is a must see destination. It is the largest privately owned arts center in the country and is located inside a renovated textile mill. You can visit artist studios, see live music, or even learn how to play a guitar made from a cigar box.
Sports fans also have plenty to enjoy here. You can cheer for the Rocket City Trash Pandas at a baseball game or watch the Huntsville Havoc play hockey. The city also recently opened the Orion Amphitheater, a world class music venue that hosts some of the biggest names in the music industry.
