This tour is all about exploring the Street Art and Street Culture in the young, vibrant and contemporary Braamfontein district while also discovering the cultural gems “hidden” across this precinct!
We meet by Skinner Cafe where we provide a brief history of the development of Braamfontein from a family farm in 1853 to the emerging student “village” it is today – this helps provide context for the rest of the tour!
We learn about the inspirations behind Shephard Fairey’s (USA) iconic “The Purple Shall Govern!” (2014) and Faith47’s (RSA) touching “Goldust” (2021) murals before visiting some stores run by local and African entrepreneurs to learn about their story and how they’ve become a popular choice amongst local streetwear fanatics!
Walking up Juta street, we go past “migrant” run businesses that include hair and beauty salons, small grocery stores, take-away shops etc. before popping into the luxury streetwear “Boys of Soweto” (BoS) showroom to see their beautiful and locally made quality clothing and learning about their journey from 2011 to today!
Once done at “BoS”, we take a short walk towards The Commune bookstore where we browse through their collection of books focusing on Pan-Africanism and African stories, before turning the corner to admire Hannelie Coetzee’s (RSA) stunning “Nzunza” pottery installation (2018) celebrating the rich history of the Ndebele people of South Africa!
No visit is complete without a visit to the local graffiti store (Grayscale Store and Gallery) and seeing the large, beautiful and thought-provoking graffiti masterpieces outside the store – all completed as part of the “City of Gold” Graffiti Festival where you can admire the works of local and international graffiti artists (USA, ESP, REU, SWI, SER) and the inspiration behind their art!
Braamfontein is a district full of young people and enterprising creatives looking to find their own voices and create their own unique paths…on this tour, we immerse ourselves into the culture and stories found beyond the walls and what you see on the streets!
Book this tour and come learn more about the Street Culture in Braamfontein and how it plays an important role and contributes to the cultural diversity of the City!
NB!
At the local Graffiti Store, you may get the chance to meet some of the local Graffiti Artists whose tags are found across the City as this is where a lot of them come to get their supplies – open MON – FRI only!
