In the mid-1800s, European settlers began to arrive, drawn by the natural mineral springs and the area’s scenic beauty. The town was officially founded in 1872, with the name “Manitou” derived from a Native American word meaning “spirit.” The springs became a popular destination for health seekers looking to benefit from the mineral waters.
