Ponce, “the pearl of the south” and the “city of quenepas,” is the second most populated city in Puerto Rico. It is located on the southern coast and is named after Juan Ponce de Leon y Loayza, the great-grandson of Juan Ponce de Leon, who was one of the main Spanish influences on the island. Although Ponce is very reminiscent of Old San Juan with vibrant, European-style buildings, locals will proudly announce “ponce is ponce and the rest is just parking.”
