PROGRAM: During the first part of the tour, Elodie, your guide, will take you through this picturesque site and explain how this yellow-ochre limestone, known as “Bibémus stone,” was extracted. It was used to build the city of Aix-en-Provence from ancient times until the 19th century.
We will descend into the canyon to understand the work of the quarryman with photos. Next, we will visit the open-air workshop of professional stonemason and sculptor David Campbell, who will talk about traditional stone cutting and carving techniques. Finally, he will give a demonstration of stone cutting, and you will have the opportunity to try your hand at cutting with tools in your hands.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION: Stone carving will only be offered to participants aged 10 and over. The walk takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. Please meet at the Bibémus car park (3080 chemin de Bibémus), in front of the DFCI barrier, 20 minutes before departure. Please do not use Google Maps to find the location.
Please bring walking shoes, a picnic, and water. Language: Bilingual tour in French and English. Access to the quarries involves steps and is not suitable for wheelchair users.
